Comics and Graphic Novels: Not Just For Kids Anymore
Although comics and graphic novels have been an accepted and highly successful medium of adult entertainment in Europe and Asia, they have only recently found favor with the American adult reading public. Most adults are familiar with comics and graphic novels through movies like Spiderman, X-Men and Batman; but there are larger themes presented in comics beyond the traditional superheroes that children enjoy. With the success of Art Speigelman's Maus and the redefining of Batman by Frank Miller in the late 1980's, the adult American comic market changed. A historical look at early pioneering efforts like the woodcut novels of Lynd Ward in the 1930s and classic and controversial graphic novels published in the last twenty years will introduce this popular genre of graphic storytelling to librarians with guidelines for collection development.
